Route 66 Kite Club – Kite Flier – Update

03/10/00

Several items of interest that I thought should be passed along prior to the next issue of the Kite Flyer.

First of all, I hope that everyone can come to the fly this Sunday 03/12/00, from 12:00 to 5:00pm, at the Del Webb Anthem Park. The Directions are as follows:

Take I-17 just north of Phoenix about five miles North of the Carefree Highway. Exit at the Anthem Way exit, then turn right and drive into the community.

We have found a T-shirt printer who has very reasonable prices without having to have a minimum order quantity. Here are the latest requests that we have received to date. Please note that tank tops are now available, and the prices listed are based on preliminary negotiations with the printer, and may be subject to minor changes.

A personal note from our Region 12 Director Ron Despojado regarding the Anthem Fun Fly Invitation our club has extended to him.

Hi Tom-

Thanks for the nice words about me.  My truck was stolen just this last weekend, so right now I am in limbo regarding transportation.  I don't know how long it will be before they decide to pay me out for my loss.  But yes, I would like to come to the event, I just need a little time to figure out my wheels.

Thanks again, I appreciate the invite.

Ron

The club sends it’s condolences over your thievery, and hope that you can resolve your transportation issue prior to the fly.

Fellow kiters-

I have been reminded periodically by the AKA the lack of kiting events we have registered for National kite month (April) in Region 12.

Many think / thought  (including myself) that the event needs to be of some certain size in order to qualify.  It needn't be.  There are several NKM events registered on the East Coast that are as simple as a kite display in a mall or kite making in the classroom.  The AKA is considering the West Coast for the 2001 convention and it would look good if there were kiters out here to support it.  I know of a few events that are in the planning stages, but have not registered.

Without quoting the entire e-mail, herewith is a portion sent to me from Phil Broder, head of publicity for the AKA:

"I've also seen a few clubs conspicuously absent. Alice, is anybody home at

the Lehigh Valley Kite Society? Ron, what's up with the San Diego folks?

Mike, I could be wrong, but I haven't seen the OSEK name on anything yet.

Don, I've seen the list of programs that Wind Wizards is running, but none

of them are registered yet. Hey, there's an idea! Has anyone checked with

kite shops in their region to see if they're doing any demos or workshops?

Let's involve our Member Merchants."

Phil intends to apply for grants on behalf of the AKA and we need to show that kiting is alive and well.  Of the 12 AKA Regions, ours has the second to lowest number of events listed.

To register your event please go to:

http://www.KiteTrade.org/NationalKiteMonth/event_reg.shtml

So c'mon gang, lets get something going.

Thanks

Ron Despojado

Important Issue Response Needed Soon: Due to all of the turmoil over the Anthem Fun Fly, I have dropped the ball in regards to the original idea of having two additional Fun Flys put on by the club. I had recommended the Plateau Park for one, and on at the Chaparral park, both selected due to their visibility. I need input from all of the members on this issue. Please e-mail me immediately with your thoughts on these recommendations. I also need to know if the club will support these events should we put them on. If so, what dates are good?

So please contact me As Soon As Possible: thomas.m.manson@boeing.com

A Note From Al-Habib The Tent Maker Regarding The New Banners

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hola.

How goes the good fight?  I noticed that the web page is down again.  Still having problems with Web Publisher?

I just wanted to keep you in the loop on the banners.  The templates for the red and yellow rays, the star, and the "shield" on the R66 logo have been cut.  The stars will be aprox 4 ft across when pieced together.  The R66 shield will be about 4 ft x 4 ft when finished.  I worked out the proportions on grid paper.  They will blend nicely and look good when finished.  I cut four of the 26 rays that form the top of the two banners tonight.  I had to quit when I snapped the rotary knife in half.  (Bummer deal.  I'll score a new one tomorrow)  All in all, things are going well.  I'll assemble the sails and then start adding all the items to them.  Sail assembly is scheduled to be finished by this Sunday for both banners.

Also of note.  I'll be moving to a new apt this month.  I will be moving the weekend of the 25th and 26th.  With the extra work that this brings, I probably will not be attending too many flys this month.  Loft one in the air for me.  I still have your Prophecy here.  I would like to make arrangements to get it back to you.  Shoot me an e-mail.

As for the Web Site, it was moved to a more supportive, and better Host Provider, and was down for only a couple of days. Hopefully this will be a long term, permanent home for the site.
