New To Report From Our Director And Fellow Member, Billy (Mad Dog) Dines.
AKA Kite Festival Scheduled
Flights Needed (New)
The following is a letter from the AKA regarding National Kite Month. I
wanted to pass this along for discussion. So PLEASE read this and respond to me
(thomas.m.manson@boeing.com) ASAP with your ideas. I will be
promoting a Flying Event at the Plateau Park due to the visibility and the
great winds that are always there. Perhaps a similar event at Chaparral Park if
it has the visibility that has been reported. I would also like to promote any
activities that I-Maginations/“Play-It-By-Air”
and Dream Merchant Kites, our only two full service kite shops in Arizona, may
be planning, with at the very least, full attendance by club members. This will
be in conjunction with whatever we can do for Lynn Trochelman, and the Kite
Fest 2000 at Del Webb’s Anthem. Please attempt to attend one of the next two
official club flies, (02/12/00 – Saturday at the Plateau Park, or
02/27/00 – Sunday at the Chaparral Park)
where we plan on discussing our plans for the National Kite Month activities.
Any other ideas? Contact Gadget Man at thomas.m.manson@boeing.com
ASAP and/or we will review your ideas at the park.
AKA National Kite Month
March 25 – April 30
Dear AKA Local Chapter Affiliate:
April will be here before you know it, and we need to get ready! The
following is excerpted from an upcoming Kiting article by the NKM Steering
Committee Chairman David Gomberg:
The AKA, in cooperation with the Kite Trade Association, has declared
April to be National Kite Month. Kite Month 1999 was a huge success, and April
2000 looks like it will be even better!
Our goals for National Kite Month are to encourage flying and promote the
joys of kiting as an educational, recreational, and sporting pastime. To make
that possible, AKA and KTA are supporting a number of projects.
First, we plan to provide professional media support for the major kite
events in an effort to get them on national television, magazines, and
newspapers. Starting with the Smithsonian, and including Maryland, Miami, and PHOENIX, National Kite Month
hopes to use the excitement of these large-scale events to communicate what
contemporary kiting is all about.
Second, we want to encourage smaller local fun flys, exhibitions, workshops
and programs across the country. We anticipate that every AKA club and member
merchant will put something on the calendar. We urge individual members to
organize events too. To make this possible, AKA is reducing the cost of
sanctioning and the official National Kite Month Headquarters will provide free
media and logistical support. Our goal is to register 250 events during the
month.
Third, we are planning to produce a complete educational program,
designed by teachers, that can be used to bring kiting to the classroom as a
tool to teach science, math, history, art, ecology, and aesthetics. We plan to
make the program available on the web and to promote it to every teacher in the
country.
And finally, we intend to help the industry by scheduling member
receptions at local kite stores where you can get “inside information” and
discounts on the newest kite products from KTAI manufacturers.
What can you do to get involved?? Attend the big events! Organize a local
fly! Do two of them if you like. More is better!! Then contact your local store
and offer to help them with a reception!
Think it’s too wet or cold outside? Schedule an indoor demonstration!
That’s sure to get media attention. And don’t forget to call your local school
and offer to present a kite workshop.
According to Steering Committee Chairman David Gomberg, National Kite
Month is designed to reach as many people as possible. “What we need” says
Gomberg, “is for as many members as possible to organize simple festivals,
workshops and fun flies. Imagine, if only one-in-ten AKA members visits a
classroom, or registers an event, there will be 400 programs across the country
– each reaching dozens of more people and generating kite media”.
To accomplish these goals, National Kite Month Headquarters will provide
the following direct services:
Issue
press releases to targeted national and regional print media promoting National
Kite Month and encouraging kite flying. The releases will include a list of
registered events and retail store contacts.
Sub-contract
with a professional agency to promote national television coverage of National
Kite Month with a special focus on the four large festivals.
Issue
press releases to local media supporting every registered event organized by a
KTAI member or AKA Affiliated Club.
National Kite Month Headquarters will also provide the following support
services:
Instructions
for registering and organizing a participating kite festival.
Instructions
for organizing a school kite making project.
Sample
proclamations, which can be adopted by local or state governments.
Sample
press releases for publicizing your event.
A
“National Kite Month Web Site” where information will be available for downloading
by local organizers, teachers, and members of the media.
A
“National Kite Month Hotline” for phone questions and information.
According to Gomberg, “We envision the web site to be set up as a
“do-it-yourself” resource where a local Kiwanis Club can get the information
they need to organize their own local kite festival, and where an elementary
school teacher can learn how to do a short unit on kiting including some of the
history, physics, and science as well as instructions for holding a kite-making
class.”
The National Kite Month project provides you with the focus, tools and
resources you need to draw more people to kiting. Media will be provided by
professional; instructions will be developed by experts; and insurance and
permits will be provided through AKA sanctioning. But success will depend on
the initiative of individuals, clubs, and member businesses.
We need your club’s involvement to
make National Kite Month a success. Be sure and share this letter with your fellow club members at your next
meeting or club fly, and have your newsletter editor pen and article about
National Kite Month for the next issue of your club’s newsletter.
Please make sure your club registers at least one event, and encourage your
membership to plan more. An Event Registration Form is enclosed, (see the
Gadget Man: thomas.m.manson@boeing.com), and if you need to make
photocopies because you’re doing several events, that’s terrific. Registration
will ensure that your events appear on the master calendar on the National Kite
Month Web Site, and that press releases regarding those events will go to your
local media.
You can reach us by phone at 760-322-4128, by fax at 760-416-0837, or by
e-mail at NationalKiteMonth@KiteTrade.org
National Kite Month web pages can be accessed directly by the following: www.KiteTrade.org/NationalKiteMonth or through a link on the
AKA’s web site, (www.AKA.Kite.org), or the KTA’s web site, (www.KiteTrade.org).
Thanks for participating in National Kite Month.
Good winds,
Jim M. Miller
Note: All flying events will be from
12:00 noon through 4 or 5 p.m. unless otherwise posted.
Off Weekend Recommended Fly – 02/06/00 – Sunday: How about
the Riverview site once again to join the ArFF fliers. (see the new Kite Field Recommendations section for
directions).
Club Fly – 02/12/00 – Saturday: Will be at the Plateau Park,
(see the new Kite Field Recommendations
section for directions). Possible dinner and drinks to follow.
ArFF Fly – 02/13/00 – Sunday: At Fountain Hills.

ArFF Fly – 02/20/00 –
Sunday: At Riverview.
Club Fly – 02/27/00 – Sunday: Will be at the Chaparral
Park. This park has been an
old time favorite, and was recommended by the Jim The Original Hippie Jennings,
as a place with all amenities and lots of interested people. So we will visit
this park and add it to our rotation. It is on Hayden and Chaparral and will go
from there for further directions. In the future, you will be able to find the
park in the Kite Recommendations section. (see the new Kite Field
Recommendations
section for directions).
ArFF Fly – 02/27/00 – Sunday: At Riverview.
Note: By popular demand and the desire
to socialize after a fly with a meal and possibly drinks, the club flying
events will be moving, periodically,
to SATURDAYS!!! Stay tuned as to when
this will start. Park selection will be
alternated so that no single group of individuals will have to drive a long way
all of the time.
Special
Note: Jane
and I have purposely bought three
indestructible Beetles for guests! Please
do not hesitate to ask for them when you have a guest attending our events.
Club Fly Report For – 01/01/2000
– Saturday: Was at the Riverview Park, (see the new Kite Field Recommendations section for
directions), and had about nine in attendance. The wind was really blowing, but
would stop and start over and over again. After failed attempts at getting the
single liners up, and the new high wind bowls up, and several of the high wind
two liners up, we all pulled out our Pro Wrens and had a great time. Numerous
spectators enjoyed the show as well. Some were launching rockets, some were
playing Frisbee golf, some were walking dogs, and some just sat down and
watched the show. We even had a man and his son come and attempt to fly their
plastic kite and eventually joined us for some tips. We all invited them to
join us in the future, and passed on our e-mail address for Kite Flyer
newsletters. Finally four of us went to the local restaurant and had wings and
beer. All said and done, a good time had by all.
Soul South Korea – Jane and I were watching the new year
being brought in on the Tele, and we noted that one of the main events in Soul
South Korea, was when the entire city held a kite fly to bring in the new year.
(Just wanted to share that little tid-bit of international news.)
Off Weekend Recommended Fly Report For – 01/09/00 – Sunday:
Was not announced. (see the new Kite
Field Recommendations section for directions). No fly report available.
Club Fly Report For – 01/16/00 – Sunday: Was at the Original
Hippie Park AKA Jim Jennings Park, (see the new Kite Field Recommendations section for
directions). This was a great day with good wind. About nine people attended
and fun was had by all. Our club expert, the Fly’n Hawaiian, instructed several
of us on half axles and boomerang throwing. The boomerang throwing occurred
during rare instances of no wind and I for one am sore from it due to not
having thrown a boomerang for several years now. The wind was almost good
enough to keep the non-ultra-lights going, but not constant enough to not have
to work at it. As it turned out, the new kite of choice for the R66KC, the
Pro-Wren, dominated the field with at least 5 of them in the air. Jeff Howard
the owner of the company that produces the Pro-Wren, and the sole individual
that produces the Pro-Wren, would have been proud to see so many of his kites
in the air. (If nothing else the club is putting his kids through school,
<ha ha>.) Jane “The Hummingbird” flew the whole time practicing loops and
figure eight’s. At the end of the fly, several of us went to Hooters for wings
and drinks, and the discussions turned to future events (San Diego in May, and
the upcoming Kite Fest), and embroidered club shirts. More on the shirts when
the information becomes available, Roman is working this issue.
Off Weekend Recommended Fly Report For – 01/20/00 – Thursday:
Was to be at the Fountain Hills Park for a Lunar Eclipse Fly, (see the new Kite Field Recommendations section for
directions). No reports available for this weekend.
Our lunar eclipse fly
last night went pretty well. Although there was hardly
any wind to speak of, the moon and clouds cooperated nicely and
provided us with an awesome show. With a little more wind, the evening
would have been perfect.
We were
all impressed with Jonathan's custom kite bag that he made. It's a
roll-up bag, similar to a Prism, except it has a larger, outer bag
that it slips into. It's nice to have such a talented seamster in our midst
-- makes me want to learn how to sew!
See you later.
Chris The Shermanator
Off Weekend Recommended Fly Report For – 01/23/00 – Sunday:
Was to be at the Plateau Park, (see the new Kite Field Recommendations section for
directions). No reports available for this weekend.
Club Fly Report For – 01/29/00 – Saturday: Was at the
Riverview Park, (see the new Kite Field
Recommendations section for directions).
What a great fly! Hummingbird Jane stayed home to prepare goodies for
the Superbowl Sunday party, (which was a great success as well), and I took old
Jake the Flake, our 10 year old Black Lab Retriever. No one was there at first
and I wore old Jake out with some tennis balls, while I flew my old plastic
boomerangs, due to almost no wind. The plastic boomerangs were easier than two
weeks ago with Al-Habib’s wooden boomerangs I might add and would like Jon and
Rom to try them out. As the wind started to pick up, and the golfer packed his
bag, I noticed some kites just south of the main flying location across the
road. Jake and I walked over, and introduced ourselves to, and later joined,
several kiters that I had not recognized from the normal Arff/R66KC groups.
As it turned out, one of the
fliers was Robert who Mad Dog Dines, Jane, and myself had met in San Diego last
year. Robert and his wife, who lives in Casa Grand, had ventured up to join the
fly on Saturday! He wished that Bill and Jane had been there because he and his
wife were looking forward to having a meal with the old San Diego group. I
indicated that if he let us know in advance, I would insure that the trio would
be present and ready for a meal. The rest of you will love fling with Robert, he
is a very happy kind of guy, and anxious to learn new kite stunts, and share
what he knows. To that end I taut him Roman’s half axle prep for a cascade, and
he taut me Klause’s away launch to a fade. Awesome.
Well it is my understanding the
Klause and his wife, who were also there, are from Germany, and love Arizona.
They appear once or twice a year, and love to fly, or sun themselves in her
case. Klause is a great photographer, and had some outrageous photo’s to share.
Also present was the soon to be new member Howard the HUGE! What a great guy,
fun to be with and ready to join the club. I helped Howard in his attempts to
learn an Axle. He is really eager to meet the rest of the group, and is ready
to join us at all of the flying fields in the valley. He has joined AKA and
will join the R66KC when his pilot’s license comes in. Howard’s fly report
follows:
Hi Tom,
Just a note to thank you
again for your help and patience. I enjoyed the day despite low wind
conditions. Meeting Robert and Klaus was a real kick. I look forward to many
fun fly-ins with Route 66.
Thanks again,
Howard
More...
Mick, his wife, and their grandson, who sent the following note, were
there as were there as well. We enjoyed putting on a show for them and would
like to invite them to come and join us anytime. We are holding some Beatles
for them to try!
My wife and I enjoy
watching outdoor activities. My
grandson who is three gets tickled watching planes, hot air balloons and things
in the sky. As for the connection to
you, my wife had seen an article either in the paper or on TV about the
American Kite Association. I found an
address for the American Kite Association and sent them an E-Mail. They in turn
directed me to you. So here we are,
another good reason for living in the valley.
Thanks for your response
Mick Riebhoff
(Special Note: We need to find more parks with an audience to introduce
more non-fliers to the sport. Some discussion at the last fly was made of
parks that might fit the bill. Please send in your recommendations ASAP
so that we can start trying them out. thomas.m.manson@boeing.com.)
Sunshine Acres Children’s Home/Orphanage Charity Event –
Currently being worked on. And has yet to be determined. (How
can we work this into the National Kite Month?)
04/07-04/09/2000 - Kite Fest 2000 to benefit Homeward Bound. It will be at Del Webb's anthem this year,
and promises to be bigger and better than Kite Fest '99 was!!!! Lynn Trochelman
is on the planning committee again, and will be getting in touch with the local
flyboys and girls to recruit volunteers to help with a few things for this year.
Lynn will keep you posted as she gets more nailed down. Lynn can be contacted
at: flykites2@aol.com
05/12-05/14/2000 – Route 66 Kite
Club Fly With Our Sister Club the San Diego Kite Club (SDKC). Come and tryout some really great winds with
loads of fun for the whole family. Sea World, Old Down, Seaport Village,
Mission Bay, Mission beach, the ocean, shopping, and a myriad of other things
for the family to do. We will be joining the SDKC, (http://www.sdkc.net) at their Mission
Bay Park for a Sister club fly on Saturday, with a night fly on the beach
Saturday evening. A Saturday evening barbecue will be promoted as well. We
would like to have everyone stay at the same hotel if possible for easier
logistics. The “Beach Cottages” hotel is on Mission Boulevard (858) 483-7440
and right on the beach for everyone’s enjoyment with lots of shops and
restaurants within easy walking distance. The rooms run from $75-$85/night for
hotel rooms through $250/night for a two-bedroom cottage. Jane and I have a one-bedroom cottage that
we all can congregate at, so my recommendation is the cheaper rooms. Everyone should get their reservations in
early because this is a popular place. Hope to see you all there!
09/22-09/24/2000 – September
San Diego Sister Club in San Diego w/ the San Diego Kite Club Event.
More information to follow when available. See the 05/12/2000 event for lodging
information.

(OSOW) Annual kite event for world piece. More to follow as information
becomes available.

Registration Renewal Timeframe
Selected For R66KC
It has been determined
that it would be too difficult to track and contact each one of you
individually, as to when your Club dues become due. Due to this, the May
timeframe has been selected as the date for club membership renewal dues. Also,
dues collected at any other time of year from new members will not be
pro-rated. Our intent is to keep the process simple, and keep the dues down to
$5.00/person/year, which is cheep compared to some clubs that charge as much as
$25.00/person/year. If anyone has any problems with this please contact me at
your earliest convenience.
Pictures Coming Soon
Sorry folks, but I
have been falling down on the job. I am the Chapter Photographer / Historian
for the Harley Owners Group, the Glendale AZ chapter, and do a lot of digital
photography for them, and as yet, have done little for the R66KC. I will be
remedying this soon, and will have photos posted on the new web site as well as
a few selected ones for the Kite Flyer. I would like to get a photo of everyone
soon so that I can share them as needed in the Kite Flyer.
New R66KC Web Site Coming Soon! You got it, a new domain has been established by
the Gadget Man for some side business, and a sweet deal for multiple access,
large amounts of space, chat rooms, bulletin boards, sub-domains, and unlimited
e-mail address’s. Due to this, several new sites will be set up, and one of
them has been designated for the Route 66 Kite Club. As soon as something is
available, I will be publishing where you will be able to fine it.
R66KC Shirts will be purchased
soon.
We are currently working this issue with Roman (The Fly’n Hawaiian)
Trugillo who is attempting to start a new T-shirt printing business. We would
rather give the business, (wait we already give him the business), than deal
with a non-kiter. To this end, please have a little patients.
It has been decided that a new batch of shirts will be purchased soon so
those club members will be able to get their very own Route 66 Kite Club
t-shirts. Due to the desire to drive down costs, and the numerous requests from
other kiters for shirts, we have decided to buy quantity of the same design,
and charge non-club members and additional $5.00 per shirt as a membership fee.
This will then bring them in as a member, and we will eventually have members
all over the world. Granted they will only be members for a year, and may not
renew their memberships, but we will have our Kite Flyer sent out to the world,
which will make kiters from everywhere aware of our club and our events. In
addition, this will drive down the cost of our shirts as a side benefit. I will
keep you all informed of when they will be purchased, and when they will be
available. I will round up the quantities of the orders based on the price
breaks from the following:
Blue Polo Style (about $25/ea)
XL 1 Dennis The Menace
1 Fly’n Hawaiian
Med. 1 Fly’n Ryan
Grey T-shirt (about $20/ea)
XXXL 4 Al-Habib
XL 1 Fly’n Hawaiian
1 Howard The Huge
Lrg. 1 Shermanator
1 Hugh
(maybe/maybe not)
Total of 11 shirts. We need at least 25 for a price break!
Important: If you
would like to identify yourself as a current OR future purchaser, please send
me an e-mail immediately. If you would like to get one later, for what ever
reason, please let me know, I will be glad to hold it for you until then. This
will help in keeping the cost down by ordering now.
New kiters are calling from all
over the country. Thanks to
our listing on the AKA web site, and in the AKA magazine, calls continue to
come in inquiring about out club and it’s activities. When you hear of anyone
interested in the club, please be sure to share my e-mail address so that they
can be added to the distribution list for the club newsletter.
Warning: We need responses to the following questions in a
timely manor, from all of the
membership. If we cannot get the needed responses, we may have to call an
actual meeting, eeeeeeuuuuuuuuwwwwwwwww.
:-(
No new questions at this time.
The following Questions Need Answers From All Of You! Some of you have responded, but we need all of you to respond, at least with a minimal of info. Please Respond As Soon As Is Possible! Thanks thomas.m.manson@boeing.com.
Kite Fest 2000 Needs Rokkaku
Trainers: Our Kite Festival
2000 coordinator has indicated that she is getting several corporate sponsors
involved with a the Rokkaku challenge, and will need some hands on lessons
before the festival. I am not sure that we have many Rokkaku fighters out there
at this time, but if you are one, please contact me at thomas.m.manson@boeing.com
to indicate that you may be able to help the corporate battlers with some basic
maneuvers in preparation for the Festival. If you know someone that might be
interested, please inform them, and let us know if they could help. As Lynn has
indicated, not a lot of experience is needed, nor time, so please consider
helping out our Kite Fest 2000 coordinator with some simple Rokkaku training.
Perhaps you might also instruct us single and double liners in the art as well!
- Thanks
1.
Jonathan Dellmar has posted that his new sewing machine is up and running and
the cutting table should be finished in the next few weeks. Jon also wants
input on the Route 66 banner? I have several ideas on this, and Jon has
suggested that he would like for all the club members to have a chance to have
some input on what it's gonna look like. Jon has several ideas as well, so
bring your thoughts on the banner to the next couple of flies for review. All ideas are needed, and none will be
rejected.
(We still
need input on this one. John will have his first practice banner ready for
review soon.)
2. Input for R66KC articles is always appreciated and always
needed. Please send all items for publication to Gadget Man Manson at: thomas.m.manson@boeing.com. Please
include R66KC in the subject of any E-mails. If you find any information
relating to kiting, even rumors, please forward them. Information on new Arizona stores that have kites, places that
have kite building materials, new web sites, and especially humorous ideas for
“Inquiring Minds Want To Know”, etc., are all desperately
needed. Anyone wishing to
publish his or her own articles or columns will gladly be accepted. Used kites
that anyone wishes to sell will also be published. Remember, it takes more than
a couple of people to make a club happen.
Our very own Jonathan (Al-Habib The Tent Maker) Dellmar, has made some fascinating finds in the areas of fabric etc. He has been experimenting with bag and handle making as well as a few banners. This section is dedicated to any information that he can share with us regarding his finds during his quest in kite making. This sections will also list the items he is willing to make for club members. We must keep in mind that Al-Habib is not in the kite retail business and has graciously offered to extend his sewing talents in making a few things for our members at his cost. I would recommend, against Al-Habib’s wishes, that you consider his time, which he does not charge for, when paying him for his wares. Below are Al-Habib’s latest offerings:
*******************************************************************
The name of the store is Fabric Depot. It's on Cave Creek, just
south of Bell Rd. on the east side of the road. It closes at 5:30pm
Mon-Fri, 3:00pm on Sat, Closed on Sun. Mostly good for handles and bag
supplies. They also sell shock cord by the yard. Very limited stock of
nylon ripstop. Some (very) odd colors. Also check out JoAnne
Fabrics. They stock ripstop nylon in the primary colors.
Handles are available in: Black, Dk
Blue, Lt Blue, Red, Orange, Royal Purple, Forest Green, Grey, White and
Rainbow. Widths are 1 inch. 3/4, 1 1/2 and 2 inch widths are
available with limited color selection. Handles are $1.00 per set, your
choice of colors, mixed colors are ok. Specify Nylon or Chromed Steel
D-rings. Finger straps and over the wrist handles are available. I
can also do the adjustable length wrist straps for a bit extra. Tips are
excepted.
Custom kite bags are in the works. Built to your specifications.
I'm also working on armored kite bags for people who travel. They
are a custom design that slips over your current kite bag. There is a
heat-curved piece of polycarbonate sheet that is sandwiched in-between two
layers of 1000 denier Nylon. It's designed to prevent the apes that pack
planes from snapping half the spars in your kite bag. Prices dependent on
options and design.
